Interactive web linking Istanbul and Tokyo

BirdHub is the digital side of a design research project between the BIRD Lab at Yıldız Technical University and the Kobayashi Lab at the University of Tokyo. Its aim is to build an interactive experience between the Istanbul and Tokyo campuses and to increase visitors’ knowledge of birds. Visitors move between the two campuses, listen to their live soundscapes separately or together, and browse a bird journal of 80 species in Turkish, English and Japanese, together with recordings of their songs. The visual design and the bird illustrations are not mine; what I built is the system that runs the experience: integrating the live audio streams of both campuses, switching between the scenes, the multilingual bird journal and its catalogue data, and recorded fallback versions for when a live stream is down. You can start the live preview below.

The visual design and bird illustrations belong to the project team.

Bird songs and scene videos are downloaded while loading, so the first start can take a moment. Click the Istanbul or Tokyo card to enter a scene; the live audio streams come from the universities’ servers, so a scene can stay silent when a stream is down for technical reasons. On a phone, landscape is recommended.
